DIY laundry detergent
I love making DIY household items like this DIY laundry detergent. It is so easy and so much better for you.
OK so I know this is not food related but once in a blue moon you will see me posting something not food related if I think it is worth sharing. I believe this post will benefit a lot of my readers so I thought to share it!
This is one out of several DIY posts I have in the blog. In case you want to check the other ones out, here they are.
I have been using this DIY detergent on and off and to be honest I quite like it. I have seen other versions using bar soap however I think I like this better. I don’t know if this is cheaper than buying regular detergent but for me the important thing is to have a clean and chemical free detergent. I have a He machine and I am fine using this detergent. No problems thus far.
For the recipe today I used half of the amount that the recipe calls for because I couldn’t find a bigger container. You can try and do this first too instead of making the huge amount and see how you like it. I think you will, but just in case!
Note that I have used Jasmine and lavender essential oils, just because I love their smell but you can use any other oil of your choice.
I am going to make my own DIY deodorant next. I have seen a couple of recipes that I am really excited to try. For the most part I have stopped using deodorant but once in a while I must use some. Now that the hot weather is upon us I don’t think I should leave the house before wearing some :-)

PrintDIY laundry detergent
Total Time: 5 minutes
Ingredients:
- An empty 1/2 gallon old detergent jug
- 1/2 cup liquid Dr. Bronner's Soap- pure castile soap
- 1/2 cup baking soda
- 10 drops jasmine essential oil
- 5 drops lavender essential oil
Directions:
Pour castile soap, baking soda and favorite essential oil inside the jug. I used a mixture of lavender and jasmine. Using the essential oils is optional but it will leave you with good smelling laundry.
Fill the jug with hot water, this will help dissolve the baking soda, until you reach almost the top of the jug. Close it and shake it.
Use about 1/4-1/3 cup per load. Make sure you shake the jug slightly each time before using. Not too much though otherwise when you open the jug the mixture will burst out.

Hi, yes I mix apple cider vinegar, water and a little bit of bleach. That is what I use :-)
What a good mommy, making all these homemade non-food stuff. :) I have to admit that I’m way too lazy.

Thanks for the recipes for detergent and shampoo. Can’t wait to try them! For deodorant: I stopped using conventional a while back but wanted something because I do have to be close to other folks at work. I’ve been using baking soda mixed with corn starch (50/50 blend). I keep it in a jar and use a brush to dust it on. AMAZING is all I can say about it. No odor whatsoever. Just thought I’d pass it along. It’s much too simple not to try.

So easy and that’s what I like. I used the peppermint Dr.Bronners and its awesome. I’m not sure if I can use any essential oils yet because afraid of breaking out more. I can’t wait to try other recipes. I also made the shampoo but haven’t tried it yet. I cut back half the olive oil so hopefully that will not make my hair greasy because I can’t stand the smell of apple cider vinegar..I just found out I have an allergy to formaldehyde and now trying to figure out what I can use. So excited to make my own products and thank you for your blogs.
That is great news. I am glad you are liking the detergent. I am yet to make more DIY recipes like my own deodorant, hopefully soon. I hope you don’t have to use the cider vinegar but keep in mind that your hair will also have to get use to the shampoo bc conventional shampoos strip your hair from their natural oils so this could be a factor in why the cider vinegar may be useful at first. I will have to try this. I used to make a homemade detergent using bar soap, but it was so time consuming. Then I switched to Soap Nuts, but a whole box was ruined when my sink leaked. This sounds easy. And I like that it’s free of synthetic ingredients, since I tend to react to some chemicals. Glad to know it works with an HE machine!
Hi, thanks for this easy recipe. I have been searching the web for an easy DIY detergent. I am in the process of making my home chemical free. It all started when I came across the many wonderful uses of vinegar which lead to baking soda and peroxide. All the other recipes just seemed to involved for me. I will be giving this one a try soon. I am also in the process of making my own face and hand wash. I can use some of these same ingredients for the detergent.
can I use super washing soda instead of baking soda?
I never heard of that but I am sure you could if it behaves the same way :-)
I did make this using the super washing soda, seemed to work fine. One thing I noticed was it was runny at first and over the course of a couple weeks, it really thickened up. Did yours do that? Also, I used it as a stain prewash and was AMAZED!! Rubbed a little on, hand scrubbed the stain and poof! Stain gone! It got stains out of my 7year olds clothes that I had given up on! THANKS!
I made a batch very similar to this (had a small amount of salt added as well) and mine is very chunky/slimy. Has this happened to you before? Doesn’t seem to affect the cleaning ability, but I’m just wondering if it’s supposed to be this consistency.
It has. It is normal. When it sits for a while sometimes it does happen. I just shake well before I use it :-)
I made up the batch and wondered if it’s okay to use in a “HE” washer, please let me know what you think.

Can i use castille bar soap as well with this instead of the liquid.

I just made a liquid form from Bronner’s Lavendat Bar by using 8 cups of boiled, distilled water to 1, 5 oz bar, grated. It made a concentrated form. I will try to use yoyr ratios and see how it works. I just cleaned practixally my entire home with it an am amazed at how shinney my granite looks! Thank you for the recioe.
Want a great deoderant ……I use coconut oil warmed in my hands and then rubbed under arms (pits) then I have half a cup of arrowroot powder or cornstarch
1/4 of plain baking soda
Couple drops of tea tree and lemon grass (optional) or what ever scent I feel like.
Then I added the powders with the oils in a nice glass bowl that has a rubber lid,I bought a big powder puff from rite Aid and just dab my pits with the powder mix over my coconut oil to feel aNd keep dry.
Do you put this in the HE washer dispenser or do you put it in the washer drum with the clothes.
I have used it in my HE washer :-)
If you want you can make smelling laundry detergent powder in your home just simple and easy way. I think it would be hygienic but caution if you have no idea about it i should not suggest you. If you are chemist it should be fit for you.
