DIY home made Whole grain graham crackers

I would have never thought of making graham crackers before, but after buying a box for $5, well I though I need it to get to it. I think homemade graham crackers is the best thing ever!!

Granted the ones I got were 100% whole wheat and were actually really good, but the price tag was not making it easier for me to keep buying them anymore. Maybe on an emergency bases.

This is the first time I have actually made crackers and what I have learned is that you really need to roll out the dough kind of thin. Some of my crackers were rather thick, nothing wrong with that but I prefer them to be thin and crispy.

These homemade crackers are my introductory post to my next one. As I mentioned before, I have to post one of the desserts that saved us while on vacation. These crackers are part of that post so stay tuned for the next post. Here it is actually….2 minute S’mores

Enjoy!!

Place all the ingredients in a bowl and mix thoroughly. If you feel the dough is to dry add an extra spoon of water. On the right picture, don’t mind my helper, in between plastic wrap roll out the dough until thin.

Here you can see the crackers before and after baking. Don’t forget to poke the holes before baking. I used a fork for that. I also used a pizza cutter to make little cracker squares.

These are awesome. I hope you get to try them, and by the way they are not that sweet!!

DIY home made Whole grain graham crackers

Miryam's original recipe

Yield: 35-40 crackers

Total Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients:

2 cups whole wheat pastry flour
1/2 cup oat bran
1/4 cup honey
3 tablespoons molasses
1/4 cup coconut oil, melted or at room temperature
4 tablespoons olive oil
2 tablespoons water
1/2 teaspoon aluminum free baking soda
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Directions:

Lined two cookie sheets with unbleached parchment paper and set aside.

In a bowl add all of the ingredients and mix thoroughly. I do this with my hands :-) If you have a stand up mixer go ahead and use it.

If you think the dough is too dry add 1 more tablespoon of water. At this stage you can preheat your oven to 350F.

Roll out the dough in between plastic wrap until thin and cut little squares with a pizza cutter. This is what I used and works really well.

Place cracker squares on the baking sheets and with a fork, poke some holes, like in the pictures, on each cracker.

Bake for 10-12 minutes. I baked mine for 10 minutes. Let them cool completely on the cookie sheets.

Store in an air tight container.

Nutrition facts calculated based on the recipe giving 40 crackers. 1 serving = 1 cracker

  11. Mmmm I love homemade graham crackers! Yours look fantastic! And what a cute little helped you had to make these :D

  12. yum! I’ve seen quite a few recipes for graham crackers but I like that your’s has molasses in them! :) I’m curious though as to why there isn’t any graham flour in them? is it because graham flour is not as good nutritionally? what about using graham flour for part of the whole wheat?
Yep… I’m full of questions today. LOL
I really am going to try these though. They sound too yummy to pass up. :)

  13. patty,

Graham flour is a type of whole wheat flour. I have actually never bought it before but I am most certain that you can sub for some in the recipe :-). Let me know how they turn out when you make them!!

  14. Thank you for this recipe! I have bought whole wheat graham crackers and they were awful! I found your recipe searching via Pinterest for whole grain crackers/snacks I could make. I tried these out and my three kids LOVED them! So nice to have another whole grain snack for them. Checking out your FB page, now! :)

  15. Trina,

thank you so much for your feedback. I am happy your three boys enjoy them :-)

    Thanks for visiting my blog.

  16. Do you think I could use honey instead of molasses or is that a pretty crucial ingredient???

I love graham crackers, and can’t wait to try this!!!!!

  17. I am excited to make these for my kids! Thanks for the recipe!

I have everything on hand except for three ingredients: whole wheat pastry flour (I have whole wheat flour, coconut flour, almond flour, and spelt flour…no pastry flour, though), molasses, and oat bran. Are there substitutions I can use for these, or should I make a trip to the store? :-)

    Thank you!

  18. You can use the whole wheat flour however since it is not the pastry flour one you may need a little bit less as the regular whole wheat flour will make the dough a bit dryer. Thanks for visiting my blog!!

  19. These look so good! Is there any substitute for the coconut oil? I don’t really care for the flavor of coconut so am nervous to try the oil.

  20. can you make it with less oil?

  21. you’re awesome!!! love every recipe!!! I haven’t done anything yet but soon and will.. this es exactly the food I want my family to eat.

  22. Wow! Was linked here via sugar free mum. I can’t eat wheat so substituted the flour and oat bran with a mix of rice flour, besan flour, tapioca flour, hazelnut meal and puffed amaranth and subbed out the molasses for all honey and the coconut oil for all olive oil (coconut oil doesn’t sit right with me) and they taste amazing! I’m in Australia so not exactly sure if the taste resembles graham crackers but they taste so yummy. I have been struggling to make crackers for some time with my ingredients requirements and although I changed these a lot they are a win! So thanks.
Just need to work on my more even rolling pin skills and even cutting so they look as perfect as yours.

    • That is awesome. With all of the substitutions you made I am glad they came out good. For sure I would love to try the combo of flours you used in this. It sounds amazing. Thanks for stopping by and letting me know. I really appreciate it :-)

  23. My Dough mixed up too wet….I added 1/8 c more of the flour. It seemed easier to handle,
After the rollout, hard to spatula off the plastic without distorting the shape, or folding up.

  24. Looks great! Is there something I can use in place of oat bran? Wheat germ maybe?

  25. Hi! Is there anything I can sub for oatbran? I can’t find it anywhere. Thanks :)

  26. Excellent!! Made them tonight and they are amazing! I used flax for most of the oil to increase the fiber, and whey instead of water. Had to add a few extra tablespoons of whey to compensate for the flax, but the dough turned out great. So easy to roll and transfer to the cookie sheet. Will definitely make again! Thanks!

  27. You are the best, I will try each of your recipes and will comment on each too.

My kid loved the cracker, and thanks again for this wonderful page.

  28. Wanted to make these for my daughter with Celiac. Any way to make them gluten free? Thanks

  29. do you know the serving size and calorie content for each serving?

  30. I made these finally and I’m glad I did, they turned out great! My 3 yr old son loves them! I appreciate that you included the nutritional information. thanks!
I put these on parchment and then easily transferred to my cookie sheet. Next i’m going to try with animal cookie cutters…

  31. Very good natural tips for preventing mosquitoes. We are dealers of mosquito net for windows and these nets are also natural. They do not have any harmful chemicals and not have any repellent materials. One should not use mosquito repellents because they are harmful and it can get into our body while breathing. The tips you have mentioned are very true and useful. Thanks.
